Number of Times Seen – Too many to count (1st time was at a video night with friends in ’87, video, cable, 13 Oct 1992, DVD, 17 April 2013)
Brief Synopsis – Four 12-year boys go on a quest to find the body of another young boy presumed to be dead. Along the way, their bonds strengthen
My Take on it – I still remember the first time I saw this, I loved it then, and now 26 years later, I still love it. This movie is one of the few where I enjoyed the movie as much as the book. Another great example of that is The Shawshank Redemption (1994) (which to most people’s surprise was also written by Stephen King). Rob Reiner cast 4 excellent young actors as the quartet. Wil Wheaton went on to Star Trek: The Next Generation fame, Corey Feldman had a great career in the 80’s and early 90’s and Jerry O’Connell is still acting a lot these days. River Pheonix went on to get an Oscar nomination for his role in Running on Empty (1988), but his life was tragically cut short in 1992 when he died of an overdose. Look for a young Keifer Sutherland as the leader of the rival gang, Ace Merrill.
If you’ve never seen this, go see it!!!
Bottom Line -Definitely highly recommended. There is a lot of inappropriate language for young kids, but the movie based on a Stephen King novella named “The Body” is one of King’s best film adaptations.
Rating – Oscar Worthy (10/10)
