Police Academy (1984)

index“Our job will be to divert traffic away from the trouble zone, and to protect public property. You will have live ammunition, but there will be no call to use it – TACKLEBERRY! Do you understand?” Lt. Harris

Number of Times Seen –  (in the theater, many many times afterward and 13 May 2013)

Brief Synopsis – Instructors at the police academy must deal with the new recruits who want to have fun while training

My Take on it – I remember seeing this in the theater as a 10 year old and although I didn’t understand most of the jokes, I still enjoyed the movie very much.

The characters of Mahoney, Hightower, Jones and Tackleberry are forever etched into my brain and on a personal note, when I (briefly) was in the police academy, I wished every day that my fellow recruits were as funny and interesting as some of these crazy characters.  I would hum the theme song many times during that stint.

This is the best of all the Police Academy movies and I somewhat cringe knowing that they plan to remake this next year. I doubt the remake will come anywhere close to the hilarity from this movie.

Its hard to believe that David Graf, Bubba Smith and Debralee Scott have all passed on in the 29 years since this came out, but there characters will always live on.

GW Bailey was great as Captain Harris, but after 7 seasons on The Closer and 1 on Major Crimes, it’s hard for me to imagine him as the strict police academy instructor.

GO SEE IT!!!

Bottom Line – Great and funny movie. They shouldn’t have made any sequels since this is the only one worth watching. Recommended!

Rating – Globe Worthy

  1. My computer’s been on the fritz a few days but I’ve seen all of your posts on my phone, crazy how many you’ve been able to write up. Wow.
Love the Godfather movies, so glad you changed your own mind about them by the way!
I loved Ratatouille but I know at least a few people who were bothered by how real the rats looked and the idea of them touching food grossed them out too much, hilarious!
As for Police Academy, two things I was gonna mention. First of all my favorite was always Michael Winslow, I thought his noises were the most incredible thing imaginable as a kid. Secondly, a nice guy at my shul is actually writing the screenplay for the next Police Academy sequel, fingers crossed it won’t be awful! 🙂

    • lots of those reviews were mostly done beforehand, but needed finishing touches. i still have 4 or 5 more like that.

      I’m glad I re-watched Godfather 1 and 2, 3…not so much 🙂

I agree with the Ratatouille sentiment. yuch!!

Winslow was great, but he never amounted to anything besides Police Academy and then a cameo in Spaceballs (1987) 😦

Tell your friend from shul that it should be funny like the original was, but different 🙂
