“You don’t know who I am. You don’t know where I am. And you’ll NEVER see me coming..” – The Mandarin
Number of Times Seen – 1 (15 May 2013)
Brief Synopsis – Iron Man returns for his 3rd solo pic. This time against a villain named The Mandarin
My Take on it – I gotta say, I LOVE Superhero movies. I always enjoyed comics as a kid and I always have a soft spot in my heart when they make movies based on those comics.
It all started for me when the original superhero movie came out; Superman (1978). I was obviously very young at the time, but I recall seeing it on TV when I must have been 5 or so and even remember seeing Superman II (1980) in the theater [I actually had nightmares from it, but what do u expect from a 6 year old 🙂 ]. Those two movies were followed by mediocre if not terrible sequels. Richard Pryor was the bright spot in Superman III (1983) and there was no bright spot in Superman IV (1987). I still enjoyed them all tho.
When Tim Burton came out with Batman (1989), he showed that you can make a great superhero movie with dark themes. I wont even go on about how bad all those sequels were, but I still found them also enjoyable because I got to see “old friends” again.
The genre died down for a while until Spiderman (2002) came out; bringing us 2 great movies and a third that had the potential, but crammed too much into one movie.
A whole new take on superhero movies was about to happen simultaneously. Christopher Nolan started his amazing Dark Knight Trilogy in 2005 and Marvel began their own Avengers series in 2008. Both achieved unforeseen accomplishments. Nolan showed that a superhero movie can be an Oscar contender [They were robbed by the terrible The Reader (2008)]. Marvel showed that you can make a series of movies showing origin stories of a number of heroes, bring them together for another movie and then continue their stories separately again.
Iron Man 3 is the first of those post-Avenger movies and they showed that they can keep the momentum (and the originality going). This movie has great action, comic one-liners and of course bad baddies that we all love to hate.
Keep ’em coming Marvel and DC!!
Bottom Line – Fun superhero movie. Lots of action and a great human story. Recommended
Rating – Globe Worthy
