The Sting (1973)

index“Sit down and shut up, will ya? Try not to live up to all my expectations.” – FBI Agent Polk

Number of Times Seen – Numerous  (TV, DVD, 31 May 2013)

Brief Synopsis – Two con men (Robert Redford and Paul Newman) in the 1930’s Chicago try to set up a scam to take on a gangster who wronged them

My Take on it – As a kid, I saw this movie numerous times and have always enjoyed it. Redford and Newman are at their very best here and the “scam” they try to pull off is artfully done.

Great supporting cast; Harold Gould, Ray Walston, Robert Shaw, Charles During and Eileen Brennan.

It’s interesting that this movie was sandwiched between the two Godfather BP wins.  They were both “heavy” themed movies and this one was much more light hearted.

Winner of 7 of 10 Oscars (Picture, Director, Musical score, Film Editing, Adapted Screenplay, Art Direction, Set Design). It lost Cinematography, Actor (Redford) and Sound.

Bottom Line – Very fun movie, worthy best picture 40 years later. Highly Recommended!!

Rating – Oscar Worthy

  3. This came out in Australia at a pivotal time in my life. I still feel my life is defined as before and after !974 when I moved to here with my family. At that point in Australia, music and movies from elsewhere took an age (well, say six months to a year).
