A Man for All Seasons (1966)

index“Death comes for us all, My Lord… even for kings.” – Sir Thomas More

Number of Times Seen – 1 (3 Jun 2013)

Brief Synopsis – The story of Sir Thomas More, counsel to England’s King Henry VIII

My Take on it – I always thought that this movie would be boring and avoided watching it.

It seems that I was right…but also very wrong.

The movie starts off very slow and I must say that I was pretty bored during the first half, but then I was able to see how amazing a character Sir Thomas More was and then I was captivated by the performance of Paul Scofield.  He carries the entire movie and shows the lengths an honest man is willing to go in order to keep his honesty and integrity no matter the cost.

Scofield played the role in the original play and also won a Tony for the same role

The story is quite tragic, but shows that a mans character is most important above all else.

It won 6 Oscars (Picture, Director, Actor, Cinematography, Adapted Screenplay and Costumes) It lost two (Best Supporting Actor (Robert Shaw as King Henry VIII) and Best Supporting Actress (Wendy Hiller as More’s wife).

Go see it for no better reason than to see a great actor perform as great character

Bottom Line – Great performance by Scofield that carries the whole movie. Highly Recommended!

Rating – Oscar Worthy
