“You ARE my son. And I have to believe that you were sent here for a reason. And even if it takes the rest of your life, you owe it to yourself to find out what that reason is.” – Jonathan Kent
Number of Times Seen – 1 (Theater 24 Jun 2013)
Brief Synopsis – A new telling of the origin of Superman and his struggle to keep Earth safe.
My Take on it – Two days in a row I saw a movie in the Theater. This is a record for me since I got married and had kids 🙂 (obviously when I was single this happened VERY often).
I was very excited to see this after seeing the previews last summer featuring both of Superman’s fathers. I thought this movie, which was done by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer would have the realistic spin on it and delve deep into the Superman’s psyche and deal with the conflict of whether he is a son of Krypton first or a s son of Earth first. The movie disappointed in that aspect. It touched on the subject a bit, but was too busy creating death and destruction throughout the world and most noticeable in Metropolis.
Apparently their story was heavily effected by the success of The Avengers movies that have come out over the last few years, thus creating a Superman movie with lots of death and destruction.
Great casting in this movie. Russel Crowe, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Michael Shannon, Laurence Fishburne, Amy Adams, Harry Lennix and Christopher Meloni. Newcomer Henry Cavill was good as the title role, but it will remain to be seen what he does with it in the future.
The movie may have made tons of $$$ like the studio wanted, but it has somewhat sullied the myth of Superman in my eyes. Nolan and Goyer were able to change the Batman myth with the Dark Knight trilogy, but in going for the over-the-top action flick, they have possibly ruined the Superman mythos.
Bottom Line – Could’ve been much better, but I’m curious to see where they will go with this in the planned sequels. Wish they developed the characters better. Recommended
Rating – Globe Worthy
