Silence of the Lambs (1991)

silence“Believe me, you don’t want Hannibal Lecter inside your head.” – Jack Crawford

Number of Times Seen – Numerous times (Theater, video, DVD, 3 Jul 2013)

Brief Synopsis – An FBI trainee is sent to enlist the help of a convicted serial killer in order to capture another killer

My Take on it – When this movie came out in February 1991, I went to see it with friends of mine and we all were amazed and haunted by this movie at the same time.  This is one of the best psychological thrillers ever made and even now, 22 years later, it still hasn’t been bested IMHO.

The psychological duel between Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter and Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling with always have a place in my heart for being amazing.

When the awards season started, it wasn’t even close to being a frontrunner and it was up against some heavy hitters; Bugsy (1991) had won the Golden Globe and it was expected to win the Oscar too, The Prince of Tides (1991) had the star power of Barbra Streisand, but she didn’t even get the Academy’s confidence with a best director bid. Beauty and the Beast (1991) was the first animated movie nominated for Best Picture and JFK (1991) was an epic Oliver Stone film that was somewhat lopsided, but done excellently.

The main thing that it had against it, was the fact that it had been released in February of the previous year and it’s a known fact that those who vote for awards tend to have short memories.

Apparently none of this mattered since it became only the third movie to ever nab the top 5 Oscars with a clean sweep. The other two were It Happened One Night (1934) and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) (Picture, Director, Actor (Hopkins), Actress (Foster) and adapted screenplay). It lost Film Editing and sound.

Bottom Line – Excellent movie. Was quite haunting the first time watching it and Hannibal Lecter is an amazing villain! Highly recommended!

Rating – Oscar Worthy
