Gigi (1958)

index“Bad table manners, my dear Gigi, have broken up more households than infidelity.” – Aunt Alicia

Number of Times Seen –  1 (17 Jul 2013)

Brief Synopsis – A young French girl befriends a French playboy who is seeking a new mistress. Can their friendship remain simply platonic??

My Take on it – I had never seen this movie and after having seen it, I cant understand how this movie swept the Oscars in 1958 winning all 9 of it’s nominations and breaking the record for the number of wins ever. (It only held that record for a year when Ben Hur (1959) surpassed it.)

This was the BP winner with the fewest letters in it’s title up until 2013 when Argo (2012) won Best picture tying the record.

I found this movie very risque for it’s time talking about affairs and mistresses and was somewhat shocked that it was allowed by the Hays Code and I actually read that the producers needed to fight to get it made for a number of years due to this fact.

It won Best Picture, Director, Art Direction, Cinematography, Costumes, Film Editing, Original Song, Music Score and adapted Screenplay.

Maybe someone out there can explain to me why this movie is supposedly so good and why I can’t fathom how that can be.

Bottom Line – Very boring and not entertaining at all, still don’t understand how it won 9 Oscars.

Rating – BAFTA Worthy

    • It didn’t appeal to me either, but since I’m trying to watch all BP’s I had no choice 🙂

I personally don’t think you’re missing out by not seeing it, but I’m still waiting for someone to explain to me how it could have a perfect Oscar record and win 9 for 9.
