“Am I a happy man? How can I not be?” Henry Whipple
Number of Times Seen – 1 (11 Aug 2013)
Brief Synopsis – The story of a father and a son and what they will each do to get what they want in life
My Take on it – This is one of those movies where you are glad that you “stuck it out” and didn’t turn it off after the first 30 minutes prove to be quite banal and boring.
Whats interesting here is that once you see the second half of the movie you understand why the first half was boring and can see it in a whole new light.
The story is so multi-layered that on reflection, it all works in a way that you never would have thought it could.
The question this movie asks (more than once) is what are you willing to do to get what you want in life. For these characters the goals keep changing and their motivations also keep changing based on what is currently happening in their life.
I was shocked to hear that this was film critic Roger Ebert’s final 4 star review, since although this movie is done very well, it’s still is unfortunately far from perfect.
Inevitable, Dennis Quaid once again shows how versatile an actor he can be. WE truly believe that he is the flawed main character who is trying to find his way in life to some form of happiness.
Bottom Line – Second half redeems the boring first one. Have patience with this and you will hopefully also enjoy it. Recommended
Rating – Globe Worthy
