Number of Times Seen – Too many to count (Theater, Cable, video, DVD and 15 Sep 2013)
Brief Synopsis – Axel Foley is a Detroit cop who travels to Beverly Hills to investigate the murder of his best friend.
My Take on it –This movie truly launched the career of Eddie Murphy. As good as he was in 48 Hrs. (1982), this is the one that put him on the map.
This movie showed that it’s possible to have a serious dramatic story peppered with comedic lines and situations that flow within the framework of the storyline.
Every time that I think about the fact that Sylvester Stallone was the original Axel Foley, I am completely dumbfounded. This movie would have been so much different if he hadn’t quit the movie and I actually fear that we probably never would have cared much about Axel or his adventures in Beverly Hills.
The two sequels that emanated from this movie; Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) and Beverly Hills Cop III (1994) were not as good as this one, but they still carried the spirit of the original and were still fun to watch.
The synthesized music for Axel F. is great! Listen to it here.
Bottom Line – Best of the trilogy. Funny and also an interesting plot. Highly recommended!
Rating – Oscar Worthy
