Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Oct 2013)
Brief Synopsis – Tonto and The Lone Ranger ride again trying to stop the gang who ambushed the rangers and killed his brother.
My Take on it – As a kid, I use to enjoy watching the old Lone Ranger episodes on TV and when I saw The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1981) on video in 1982, was completely hooked on the genre.
The problem I had with this movie is that it tried too hard to add humor and most of the time it didn’t work.
The storyline clearly followed the Lone Ranger canon except for the fact that this version was clearly missing an integral part; the everlasting friendship of The Lone Ranger and Tonto. I always found that to be essential to their partnership. They were always able to count on one another even when the chips were down. I think that the writers thought that it would be more entertaining if there was more animosity and a lack of trustworthiness between the two, but that particular point hurt this movie IMHO.
I also think it was unwise to decide to make The Lone Ranger a pacifist. 😦
Many people will look at the box office results and back alley politics as a reason not to see this movie, but regardless of my thoughts on the (lack of) friendship between the two main characters, it is a worthwhile movie to watch since it was still done in a fun way.
Bottom Line – Fun movie, but unfortunately like many action movies lately, they tend to try to use too many special effects and don’t work enough on the plot and characters.
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
