Cannonball Run II (1984)

cr2“And now, the Rigatonis, the Tortellinis, the Fettuchinis, and even the Raviolis are bigger than we are. And why?” – Don Canneloni

Number of Times Seen – too many too count (all through the 80’s on cable, 22 Apr 2007 and 13 Oct 2013)

Brief Synopsis – One year after the last Cannonball Run (1981), many of teams return to try and claim the title of fastest racer across the USA.

My Take on it – This movie has a pretty stupid plot that is held together by a really thin piece of string.

What makes it fun is that they were able to once again so many stars to appear in this goofball comedy that really goes nowhere.

Burt Reynolds, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Dom Deluise, Jamie Farr are joined by Marilu Henner, Tony Danza, Don Knotts, Tim Conway, Telly Savalas, Shirley MacLaine, Susan Anton, Jackie Chan, Ricardo Montalbon, Richard Kiel, Jim Nabors and Frank Sinatra for this race.

One of the funniest bits in this movie are when Conway and Knotts as cops who encounter a driver who they have trouble handling and the slapstick involved in the situation.

I also loved how the movie parodies The Godfather (1972) and that most of the gangsters involved in the movie are actors who played characters killed during the course of the Godfather saga.

As a kid, I saw this movie so many times on cable and loved it, but re-watching it now, I can clearly see how dumb it is, but still fun to watch.

Bottom Line – Fun, but really dumb movie. Have great memories of it, but watching it now doesn’t measure up.

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
