Brave (2012)

index“There are those who say fate is something beyond our command. That destiny is not our own, but I know better. Our fate lives within us, you only have to be brave enough to see it.” Princess Merida

Number of Times Seen – 2 (1 Nov 2012 and 13 Nov 2013)

Brief Synopsis – A young Scottish princess wishes to defy tradition and make her own choices in life.

My Take on it – I was really looking forward to seeing this one and was expecting a much better film, but that is mostly because PIXAR has given us all such a high standard in their movies that we have come to continuously expect near-perfect movies.

This movie isn’t perfect, but the animation and story are better than many other animated movies that have come out over the years but it falls slightly because it was made by PIXAR and not by one of their competitors.

For obvious reasons, this movie reminded me a lot of Braveheart (1995), but maybe that all because of the Scottish accents and blue face-painting of some of the characters.

I think this movie is truly weaker because it’s heroine (PIXAR’s first female lead) is just not as interesting as PIXAR’s previous leads and she just isn’t able to carry the story as well as the others have over the years.

This movie won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature over Wreck-it Ralph (2012) which still baffles me since the latter was much more entertaining and is proof that other companies can make great animated movies on par with PIXAR.

Bottom Line – One of the weakest of the Pixar films, but still much better than many other animated films. Recommended

Rating – Globe Worthy

  1. I agree with you. Brave was very visually impressive, but the story just felt a little hollow compared to the amazing creativity and charm of so many other Pixar films. Wreck-It-Ralph definitely should’ve beat it out!

  2. Wow – I’ve had to go all the way back to November 17th! Stupid Xmas season – no spare time. 😉 There’s no option to be able to comment on all your most current reviews, though. :-/ I tried starting there. Agree with you on Brave although it HAS grown on me since I first saw it. And I think Merida, although not the best Pixar character, is still a strong female character. She’s grown on me as well. Nice review. 🙂
