Number of Times Seen – 2 (8 Feb 2011 and 26 Nov 2013)
Brief Synopsis – A man trapped in a coffin underground with only a cellphone must try to figure out a way to escape before his oxygen runs out in 90 minutes.
My Take on it – When I saw this movie the first time, I was blown away. When I saw it the second time, I was even more blown away.
The concept here is truly amazing: A real-time movie that all takes place in one location…a coffin. The only actor we see is Ryan Reynolds who shows here that he can act very well because he shows us the whole gamut of his emotional abilities within this 90 minutes. We see his hope, despair, regret, happiness, fear and above all else, helplessness.
All other actors are only heard via his cellphone and he must waste precious time via each call to explain his predicament and plead for someone to help him. Getting an answering machine with such a critical amount of time can be the most frustrating of all for him.
Another factor is the fact that we don’t know the true motivations of anyone on the other end of the phone because just like the protagonist, we have no idea what their true intentions are because we cannot see their facial expressions, only what they say and how they say it.
An exceptional movie!
Bottom Line – Amazing concept, Very unique way of making a movie. Ryan Reynolds is truly incredible here. Highly recommended!
Rating – Oscar Worthy
