Malice (1993)

Number of Times Seen – at least 2 (on cable in the 90’s and 11 Dec 2013)

Brief Synopsis – A young couple trying to have a baby befriend a surgeon with a “god-complex” and soon find out that life can change within minutes and they must find a way to deal with it.

My Take on it – I saw this movie twenty years ago and had fond memories of it, but in the twenty years since, two major things have occurred that have changed the way this movie is viewed.

Firstly, all three of the main actors are now considered A-listers (OK, Pullman is close, but not quite there) and their performances here are not that great and secondly, the writer is Aaron Sorkin.

Sorkin wasn’t a household name in TV and the movies at the time and only had one movie screenplay under his belt, A Few Good Men (1992), which was based on his play.

This story is pretty mediocre and only has one scene with a Sorkinesq monologue when Baldwin claims “he is god”, other than that, it’s a typical thriller that doesn’t add anything new to the genre.

Unfortunately, we have come to expect better screenplays from Sorkin and this one just doesn’t do his name justice.

Bottom Line – Mediocre story by Aaron Sorkin starring Kidman, Pullman and Baldwin. Not as good as you would expect.

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
