“The world is full of evil but if we hold on to each other, it goes away.” – Theo
Number of Times Seen – 1 (24 Dec 2013)
Brief Synopsis – A male schoolteacher is starting to get his life in order and then everything gets mixed by by a small lie told by one of the children.
My Take on it – This is another example of why I don’t like watching foreign films. No matter how great the movie is, I always feel that the fact that I must rely on reading the subtitles somehow detracts from the viewing experience.
This movie has a very powerful storyline and plot. It tries to show the tole a small lie can take on a man’s life, affecting his close friends, lover, child, and above all, the entire community at large.
Once people get certain thoughts into their minds, they cannot get them out no matter whether it is proven true or false.
The acting here is truly done so well that the viewer doesn’t feel as if they are watching actors, but actually a true story as it occurred.
This is another movie that I would add to my list of “movies that are great and powerful, but too disturbing to probably ever re-watch. A perfect example of that is also Compliance (2012).
This movie was so “heavy” that I needed a bit of time following my viewing to lower my heightened emotions. That in and of itself attests to how good this movie really is.
Bottom Line – Very powerful and disturbing movie. Done exceptionally well that you can feel every characters emotions pouring out from the screen. Highly Recommended.
Rating – Oscar Worthy

I usually love watching foreign films, but otherwise, I completely agree. Especially on Vinterberg’s ability to make us feel as though we were watching real people living real lives. Made that same point, at some length, in my own review.

I guess for me to fully enjoy a movie I need to understand with my ears what everyone is saying. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) is one of my favorite movies, but I liked it better dubbed than with subtitles.

So many people say this is great but sounds far too disturbing for me – These kind of things upset me too much.
Don’t mind subtitles, though.

very disturbing movie and I agree that it’s hard to watch. Have you ever seen Compliance (2012). That was amazing, but also VERY VERY disturbing because it’s based on truth.
