Number of Times Seen – at least 5 times (Theater in 1989, Video, DVD, 2 Sep 2001 and 2 Jan 2014)
Brief Synopsis – After a nuclear submarine goes missing, a team of Navy SEALS must enlist the help of deep sea drillers to help them salvage the ship.
My Take on it – James Cameron once again proved here how innovative a film maker he is.
After having hits with The Terminator (1984) and Aliens (1986), he once again undertook the task of making another sci fi adventure. This time dealing with strange happenings in the depths of the seas (instead of space and the future as in his previous two hits).
Whats always interesting about Cameron’s movies is that he not only directs, but also usually also writes the scripts himself which allow us to really see whats in his mind for each of his movies. His visions are so amazing that he has actualized for us some of the most spectacular visual ideas in film history.
The special effects in this movie are no less amazing than in any of his other ones. The fact that he got the effects done right for the “water creature” gave him the ability to eventually realize the creation of the effects for the T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991).
The story here is a bit weaker than in some of his other movies and I think this one runs a bit too long, but other than that, it’s another James Cameron success.
Bottom Line – Great effects. Story isn’t superb, but done quite well. Cameron showed here that he had a big future ahead of him. Recommended!
Rating – Globe Worthy
