Blue Jasmine (2013)

Blue-Jasmine-Movie-Review“Anxiety, nightmares and a nervous breakdown, there’s only so many traumas a person can withstand until they take to the streets and start screaming.” – Jasmine

Number of Times Seen – 1 (6 Jan 2014)

Brief Synopsis – A woman travels to visit her sister in California after her marriage and life fall apart.

My Take on it – I have enjoyed many of Woody Allen’s films in the past, but I think he is better at creating memorable characters and humorous situations than good strong plots and story-lines.  This one just doesn’t do his name justice (IMHO).

His movies usually feature an all-star cast and this movie is no exception.  His cast here is Cate Blanchett, Sally Hawkins, Alec Baldwin, Andrew “Dice” Clay (who I had trouble recognizing at the beginning), Bobby Cannavale, Louis C.K. and Peter Sarsgaard.

Allen tries too hard here to create characters who each lie to themselves and to others in order to just get by in life.  Unfortunately, this makes all of the characters very unlikeable and I started to wish that I hadn’t met most of them during this movie’s 90+ minute run time.  Allen has created some very likeable characters in the past and I think he misses the mark here with these characters.

There are a few humorous lines and situations in the movie, but in general this movie wasn’t anything above average.

Bottom Line – Not one of Allen’s best (IMHO) there are a few funny lines and situations.

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
