Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

Brief Synopsis – A hustler diagnosed with HIV tries to find better treatment for himself and other people infected with the disease.  Based on a true story.

My Take on it – I didn’t really know what to expect from this movie going in except for hearing that this movie is by far Matthew McConaughey’s best work.

He is almost completely unrecognizable due to the fact that he lost close to 40 pounds for this role.

The story itself is actually pretty good.  It is based on the true story of a man infected with HIV that tries to find a way to live longer than the 30 days the doctors tell him he has left.  He begins to smuggle non-approved drugs into the US from Mexico to try and help himself and his friends combat this deadly disease.

This isn’t an easy movie to watch since we all now know how difficult life must have been for those diagnosed with HIV and AIDS in the early years, but it’s worth watching because of McConaughey’s stellar performance.

I’m not sure if this movie would be as watchable as it is if someone else played that part.

I’m still torn as to who is more deserving of a Best Actor award for this year between McConaughey and Robert Redford in All is Lost (2013).

Bottom Line – Pretty good movie, but McConaughey is what makes this movie so watchable. It’s definitely his best performance. MM and Leto are both amazing here, but the story lacks the epic feeling and isn’t as powerful as one would hope. Recommended!
