The Spectacular Now (2013)

index“You’ll always be my favorite ex-boyfriend” – Cassidy

Number of Times Seen – 1 (6 Jan 2014)

Brief Synopsis – A modern day teen romance movie that takes place over the course of a senior year in high school.

My Take on it – This is a movie that I wanted to like more than I did which is unfortunate.

I have seen this appear on numerous top 10 lists of 2013 and was expecting to be blown away by what seems to be an ordinary teenage love story.

This movie is good tho and I liked how the characters seemed to be real and slowly fell in love over the course of time and not just be hit by lighting and “wham bam they are together”.  This movie works slowly to show the development of their gentle love.

The first hour tho is just a build up for the last half hour.  Since we first get to know the characters and then find out more about their motivations the realism of these characters works very well.  They share good and bad emotions and slowly deliberately learn more about themselves through the course of the year (and the movie).

This movie delves into the notion of trying to find out what we live life for; the present or for the potential future and it gives a very satisfying answer to that question.

Bottom Line – Very good (but not great) teenage love story which moves at a nice slow deliberate pace. Recommended!

Rating – Globe Worthy

  1. I largely agree. I think the resolution rushed, and Sutter’s coming of age poorly handled. But the film has stuck with me . . . it’s been almost half a year (and near 100 films) since I saw it, and I still remember almost every scene.

The fact that this is a real teenage relationship put on screen is probably the primary explanation.

    • I toyed with giving this one a higher rating b/c it was very good. Just felt something missing. I agree that there are moments of greatness in what would be normally seen as an above average teen romance movie
