“If it was never new, and it never gets old, then it’s a folk song.” – Llewyn Davis
Number of Times Seen – 1 (23 Jan 2014)
Brief Synopsis – A week in the life of a young folk singer during the 1960’s.
My Take on it – I had heard about this movie months ago and it was originally considered to be the Oscar front-runner.
The momentum tho died down and in the end it only received two Oscar nominations – in Cinematography and in Sound Mixing. I don’t think it has a chance to win either of them.
This movie had a great nostalgic feeling and they do a great job of transporting us to that time and place.
The story is somewhat simplistic, but that’s the beauty here since the movie is about a man and his music. He isn’t the most likeable guy around and he argues with everyone, but we actually like him throughout the movie and we want to know what will happen to him even after the movie is over.
That shows the genius of the Coen’s, since they know how to take a very simplistic story and make is so interesting.
The music by T-Bone Burnett is excellent and it reminded me a lot of his music from Crazy Heart (2009). Many of the tunes are quite catchy and I found myself humming along throughout.
As good as it is, there is still something missing that would make this movie great.
I wish I knew what that was because the potential is definitely there 😦
Bottom Line – Interesting story with a great musical score. Not the Coen brother’s best film, but still done extremely well. Recommended!
Rating – Globe Worthy

Good review, I loved this film! Coen brothers showing brilliance again, I reckon it stands a chance at cinematography as it was shot with perfect execution and I was disappointed it didn’t get any more Oscar noms. Glad you enjoyed it though 🙂

I think Gravity has that one locked up, but I agree that it deserved more noms

Excellent review. Agreed that this isn’t the Coen’s best movie. But it is very good and compares favorably.
I would call this one Oscar worthy, using your grading scale. It is a deeply personal film.

I agree that it’s very personal, but something is still lying beneath the surface waiting to burst out and doesn’t. You can feel it throughout.

This seems to be splitting people down the middle this one. That being said, I’m a massive Coens fan and can’t wait to see it.

As you can see by my review, it isn’t spectacular, but it’s a nice story about a not nice guy.
