“Let me get this straight, you snuck out of the house in the middle of the night to clean up graffiti? That’s an amazing story.” – Glenn
Number of Times Seen – 1 (9 Feb 2014)
Brief Synopsis – A young boy living in a foster home befriends a killer whale at a local amusement park and becomes the only person who can properly train him.
My Take on it – This is a movie I for some reason have been avoided for 20 years. I can’t even explain why, I just always wanted to see it, but just didn’t.
My interest in seeing it once again was perked after viewing the amazing documentary Blackfish (2013).
So I finally got around to watching it and was sorely disappointed.
This story is sooo silly. Who would believe that an amusement park would let a 12 year old kid train a killer whale. I kept wondering when it would just bite him because the kid was very annoying throughout.
I’m not sure what I would have thought about this if I’d have seen it 20 years ago, but after having seen Blackfish (2013), I find this movie so unbelievable and can’t believe it even had 3 sequels made from its stupid premise. Not an easy movie to watch knowing now how KIller Whales have been treated over the years in captivity.
The one thing I liked about it (and even liked 20 years ago when it first came out) was the theme song by Michael Jackson for the song Will you be there. Hear it here.
Bottom Line – Pretty silly premise if you stop to think about it. Liked the music. Not easy to watch after having seen Blackfish (2013).
Rating –Razzie Worthy

I haven’t seen this since the mid-90s, but that us largely because I never liked it. Not even as a kid.

I haven’t seen this in ages. I think I liked it, but I would’ve been pretty young when I saw it. Your review doesn’t exactly make me want to go rewatch it. Haha. Nice job. 🙂

For feel-good Sunday afternoon thrills surely there is nothing better than Free Willy! But yes, it’s hardly Oscar-worthy. 🙂

Thanks for commenting Dan. Unfortunately, if I’m gonna look for a fun feel good Sunday afternoon thrill movie it probably won’t be this one…sorry to disappoint 😦
