Number of Times Seen – 1 (25 Feb 2014)
Brief Synopsis – A young American girl living in Cuba with her parents in 1958, meets and falls in love with a local boy when they start to dance together in order to win a local dance competition.
My Take on it – I decided to watch this movie based on a recommendation from Kim at Tranquil Dreams. (Thanks Kim!)
I enjoyed the original Dirty Dancing (1987) as a kid and was interested in seeing how they could try and re-imagine the concept.
I can’t say that I liked this movie, but I also didn’t hate it.
The story itself isn’t much to write home about, but I liked the numerous “nods” to the original. A few times during the movie, I could hear music from the DD soundtrack in it’s Latinized format, which I must say sounded great.
The acting here isn’t as good as in the original, but it was ni9ce to see Patrick Swayze in a small unnamed part as a local dance instructor who encourages the main character to pursue her love of dancing. He isn’t Johnny Castle, but he is still good here.
The original is much better.
Bottom Line – Not as good as the original, but the Latinization of the music is nice to listen to. Pretty mediocre re-imagining
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
