We Are What We Are (2013)

we are what we are“There’s a storm coming” – Emma Parker

Number of Times Seen – 1 (3 Mar 2014)

Brief Synopsis – A coroner tries to investigate a number of missing young girls in a small town.

My Take on it – This is one of those difficult movie for me to review since I recognize the good film making job, but cannot say I like the premise or the way the movie presents itself.

Some of the characters are developed well while others are cookie cutouts.  We aren’t 100% sure whats going on until the last quarter of the movie which keeps the mystery interesting and the film makers chose a perfect ending to this movie.

Having said all that, this movie presents itself as a thriller/mystery when in reality it leans much closer to being a horror movie (which is a genre I’m not too fond of).  It also moves quite slowly and I was hoping and praying at certain points that something would just happen already.

So while I can recognize that this done well, I didn’t like it too much because of the subject matter.  I am proud of myself for making it all the 3way through eventhough I knew it wasn’t gonna be my kind of movie pretty early on.

Bottom Line – Well made movie, but I just can’t say it was enjoyable to watch.

Rating – BAFTA Worthy

  1. I have this one in my to-watch list. Sounds interesting, especially since it’s slanted towards the horror genre – something which might be more up our alley.

  2. You know I like this one much more than you. It has some horror elements, but I don’t think it nearly scary enough to really count as horror. For my money it is way more dramatic than horrific.

But it is also not exactly entertaining, so I can understand why you didn’t much like it.

  3. Only seen the original, which i’ve heard is better than this, though i felt was only two-thirds a good film. I believe the premise is slightly different (going purely by the poster of the remake) so i’ll need to check this one out. Good review Rob!
