Jaws 2 (1978)

jaws 2“You don’t have to worry about being sued or being ruined if this turns out to be what I think it is, because there won’t be anybody here!” – Martin Brody

Number of Times Seen – 2 (mid 90’s and 13 Mar 2014)

Brief Synopsis – A new shark comes to Amity island and once again terrorizes the natives and the vacationers.

My Take on it – I love the tagline for this movie and not much else. – “Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water”

This movie is rife with flaws and it doesn’t come any where close to being as good as the original was.  This movie is more of a remake than a sequel since so many similar things happen.

Shark kills someone, sheriff suspicious, politicians think it’s nothing because they don’t want to scare the tourists, sheriff continues to believe against all odds that he can take care of the menace himself, etc. etc.

Roy Scheider was always a great actor (especially in the original), but he seems wasted here because the story just isn’t innovative at all.  He was probably wise to “jump ship” after this one, because if memory serves it just gets worse and worse in the other sequels.  (I plan to rewatch and review them soon, so only time will tell).

The music by John Williams isn’t as inspiring as it was in the original and ultimately this is mediocre as most of a sequel to the original summer blockbuster movie.

Bottom Line – Not even close to being as good or as suspenseful as the original.

Rating – BAFTA Worthy

    • Thanks Josh. I was actually interested in re-watching 3 and 4 and didn’t want to skip this one. I remember 3 being more than ok and 4 being weird, but we’ll see when I watch them hopefully later this week.

  1. Nice post. I really like Jaws 2 and the score by Williams (another one I own) is very capable in maintaining some suspense and provides great closure by the film’s finale. Then again the complete score was not used but that’s ok.

I thought Jaws 2 was a decent showcase of Scheider’s leading abilities too. Despite the thin story. But I’m biased. He was always one of my fav actors.

No, Jaws 2 isn’t as terrifying as the first (because like you said it is just more of the same after the first) but it has it monster movie moments. It indeed feels like a quirky B movie sometimes like Tim mentioned above.

    Good work.
