Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)

ANCHORman“[on the phone] I have no idea where he would have gotten ahold of German pornography. But you and I are mature adults; we’ve both seen our share of pornographic materials. Oh, you never have? Of course you haven’t, how stupid of me. Neither have I. I was just speaking in generalities. Right. I’ll stop by the school a little later, Sister Margaret. Bye. ” – Ed Harken

Number of Times Seen – 2 (16 Feb 2006 and 25 Mar 2014)

Brief Synopsis – The story of a successful 1970’s anchorman and his team of reporters and how they deal with a new female reporter in their male dominated world.

My Take on it – I have never been a big fan of this kind of humor in a movie and Will Farrell is known for this over-the-top kind of humor.

For people like me who don’t find this kind of humor funny, it can be torture sitting through this movie.

There are a few things here that definitely impressed me tho.

Farrell has such a big name that he is able to attract so many stars to appear in his movies even if it’s just for one or two scenes.  The list is too long to list here, but the melee scene has about 10 famous actors that agreed to participate in this film with just a line or two and then be a part of a big fight scene.

My favorite actor in this movie is by far Fred Willard who has a relatively small part, but delivers his lines in a way that just cracked me up each time he opened his mouth.  Most of these conversations are one sided (over the phone) and the lines are just hilarious.  See the quote above for an example.

I think that in general Farrell is much better when he takes on serious roles than his over-the-top ones because I enjoy movies more when I can like the characters and when they are complete idiots saying stupid things the whole time, I find it hard to like them.

There are much better comedies out there.

Bottom Line – This movie is mainly for people who like this kind of humor (unlike me), so I didn’t laugh very much and thought it was mostly pretty stupid. (eventhough that’s the point).  So it was a pretty mediocre movie IMHO.

Rating – BAFTA Worthy

  2. I usually don’t go for this kind of comedy but I found myself laughing quite a bit w/ this one. I still haven’t seen the sequel though, but might give it a rent at some point. I thought Steve Carrell was hilarious, I find him funnier than Will Ferrell.

  4. We are very much of the same opinion in regards to this one. The only things that made this remotely entertaining for me were the anchorman brawl and Brick. Everything else…meh. Lol. Nice review!
