Days of Thunder (1990)

days of thunder“You and Rowdy have the same sickness, it’s called denial and it’s probably going to kill you both” Dr. Claire Lewicki

Number of Times Seen – Twice (early 90’s on cable and 25 Mar 2014)

Brief Synopsis – A hotshot young race car driver works his way into the upper racing circuit.

My Take on it – This movie was really just terrible.

Maybe it’s because I’m not a big fan of racing, but I found there to be no redeeming moments in this one.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman had no chemistry together [Yes, I know that they eventually got married, but that didn’t last, so maybe it’s true that they didn’t have chemistry after all 🙂]

I have always been a fan of Robert Duvall, but his character isn’t developed enough here to care about him and the bits and pieces that we know about his being an amazing racing coach doesn’t help enough.

The plot and script aren’t so great and I didn’t care at all what would happen to any of the characters.

The one thing I can say positively about this film is that Tony Scott was an amazing Director who knew how to shoot action scenes in a way very few others were able to do.  The race scenes themselves are pretty cool to watch.

This came out when Cruise was in his hey-day, so I’m sure lots of people saw this just because he was in it.

I wonder what those people would think about it if they re-watch it now.

Bottom Line – Terrible movie that doesn’t have much of a plot, lacks chemistry between future newlyweds Cruise and Kidman but the racing scenes are shot very well by Director Tony Scott.

Rating – Razzie Worthy

  1. Ha!! I watched this ages ago. I didn’t fancy it either, I thought it was an OK movie. I gave it a 5/10.
Looks like you hate more than I do. But I agree there is no chemistry between Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.
I have no desire to re-watch it.

    • Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Yes, the chemistry is not there at all. I’m glad I re-watched this 20 years down the road so I wasn’t at all disappointed that it was so bad because I didn’t really remember it at all.
