Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom (1984)

indiana jones and the temple of doom“If you think I’m going to Delhi with you, or anyplace else after all the trouble you’ve gotten me into, think again, buster! I’m going home to Missouri where they never feed you snakes before ripping your heart out and lowering you into hot pits! This is NOT my idea of a swell time!” – Willie

Number of Times Seen – Way too many to count (A few times in the theater in 1984, cable, video, DVD, 11 Apr 2000 and 23 Apr 2014)

Brief Synopsis – The further adventures of Indiana Jones which bring him and his companions to India where they are confronted by a cult that sacrifices humans.

My Take on it – The wait for the return of Indiana Jones took 3 years, but this movie proved that it was well worth it.

I even remember as a 10 year old being so excited about it’s premiere that I wrote it in big letters on the family calendar and my parents got a bit upset at me for that 🙂

When it came out, I eagerly went to see it more than once in the theater and was so enthralled by the storytelling.

When the movie made it to HBO the following year, I couldn’t even count how many times I had managed to see it.  I knew the whole movie and everything that happened in it by heart.

This was clearly my 2nd favorite movie at the time (besides Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983)]

I have always loved the character of Short Round and as much as I enjoy Sallah in the 1st and 3rd Indy movies, Short Round will always be my favorite Indy sidekick.

This movie helped create the idea for the PG-13 rating due to its “infamous” dinner scene.

It’s the darkest of all Indy movies, but it still works well and the action and adventure portrayed here is just lots of fun to watch.

John Williams once again proves how smart he is in the score.  He tales parts of the music from the original score and incorporates them within his new score giving the viewer (listener) familiarity and continuity at the same time.  The main theme here is extremely long, but I listen to it all the time and love every moment of it.

Bottom Line – Great sequel, much darker than the first movie, but still lots and lots of fun. Highly recommended!

Rating – Oscar Worthy

  2. Not my favorite of the first three movies but it features the best action sequence of any of the films… You’ll know which one I’m referring to: the mine-train escape!
