Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (1937)

snow white and the seven dwarves“Step up to the tub, ’tain’t no disgrace / Just pull up your sleeves and get ’em in place / Then scoop up the water and rub it on your face / And go “Bl-bl-bl, bl-bl-bl, bl-bl-bl!” – Doc

Number of Times Seen – Too many to count  (cable, video and 22 Apr 2014)

Brief Synopsis – A young princess is chased away by an evil queen who is jealous of her beauty

My Take on it – I, like most of you probably know the story of Snow White purely from this movie.

Walt Disney was able to take a children’s story and make it an iconic story that everyone now knows.

The idea of giving each of the dwarves names based on their personalities was ingenious and completely made the story (and the dwarves themselves) recognizable forever more.  It would be quite hard to forget Doc, Sneezy, Happy, Grumpy, Bashful, Sleepy and Dopey (even with the Brady Bunch episode devoted to this story) 🙂

This movie won Walt Disney an honorary Oscar for his innovation in animation.  He got one normal sized Oscar and 7 smaller ones.

The funniest bit of trivia that I read about this movie is that after it’s run at Radio City Music Hall, they had to replace ALL of the seats because so many kids who saw the movie wet their pants (and subsequently their seats) during each and every viewing during the scene when Snow White is banished to the forest.

The one drawback that I see in this movie is that there are too many boring scenes which make parts of the story drag on for too long.  If they would have cut some of those scenes, it would have made the movie tighter and more enjoyable than it already is.

This movie’s success led to a slew of so many more animated features from Disney (and from elsewhere) over the next 77 years and beyond.

We all have Walt to thank for that.

Bottom Line – Amazing animation. A fitting beginning to Disney’s slew  of full length animated features that are still being made 77 years on.  Slightly long and drawn out, but effective. Recommended!

Rating – Globe Worthy
