Brief Synopsis – Chronicles the friendship of two people over 12 years who don’t even realize they are in love.

My Take on it – I have always loved this movie and truly think it’s one of the best (if not THE best) Romantic comedy ever made.

Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are both amazing here.  They both play their characters so well and they both managed to show us all the quirks and flaws of each of them but at the same time were able to make us love their characters including those quirks.  The characters are supposedly caricatures of writer Nora Ephron and Director Rob Reiner who both seem to embody many of the characters quirks

I have seen this movie so many times and can quote most of the movie by heart.  Even as a teen, I loved this movie when I didn’t even understand it completely as I do now.

This movie is funny, insightful about people and relationships and completely loveable.

It’s really a no-brainer to cast Meg Ryan in a romantic comedy, but I’m sure that the casting of Billy Crystal caused a lot of concern at the time, but ultimately, I think he was the perfect actor to tackle this role.

I have heard numerous debates over the years as to whether this movie or Annie Hall (1977) tell the story of a great relationship better and I think the one is slightly better because the script is close to perfect and because of the casting.

I cant write a review without mentioning the great stories told by different couples (in documentary style) at the beginning of each new chapter of the story.

The decision to add them was genius and although the story of Harry and Sally is quite different from all the other one=s told by (mostly) elderly couples, the point of the stories works well; that every relationship story is different but ultimately we all get to the right place no matter how long it may take.

Bottom Line – Excellent movie, perhaps one of the best Rom/Com’s ever made. Funny, insightful and loveable.  Perhaps the best work of Crystal and Ryan.  Highly Recommended!

Rating – Oscar Worthy (no change from original review)

  2. Nice review Rob, I am also a fan of this movie and like you said the first time I saw it I don’t think I quite understood it. Watching it as an adult made so much more sense. I have to say I think Annie Hall is better, just my opinion. 🙂
