“Wait, just wait a minute, just wait a minute, let me explain one thing to you. I have never, ever chased after a girl before in my life and it feels funny to me. Now if you’re not gonna go out with me I wanna know why. You do like me don’t you? ” – Buddy Holly
Number of Times Seen – 1 (18 May 2014)
Brief Synopsis – Biopic of Buddy Holly’s climb to fame and tragic death during the 1950’s.
My Take on it – There are certain figures in history that we know bullet points about their lives and live them for all those “little” bits we know.
The tragic life story of Buddy Holly fits perfectly into that niche.
His rise to fame in the infant Rock ‘N Roll scene in the late 50’s is well known due largely to the fact that his music was great and can still be enjoyed today.
Gary Busey plays the 22 year old Holly and despite him being10 years older than Holly himself at the time of filming did a great job. He was even nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe as Best Actor for this role. (His only nominations.)
The music in this movie is excellent and the cast actually sings 12 of Holly’s songs in the movie. What was interesting to me was that I recognized most of them but didn’t even realize that they were his songs.
Something felt missing from this movie and although I am not a fan of remakes of movies, I don’t think I would mind seeing a revisioning of this story. I am curious if any current director could take Holly’s life story and make the movie even better than this one.
Bottom Line – Nicely done biopic. Busey is great here despite his age. Great songs (by Holly obviously). Wonder if someone could make a better movie about his life now. Recommended!
Rating – Globe Worthy
