“Now you listen to me, James Hawkins. You got the makings of greatness in you, but you got to take the helm and chart your own course. Stick to it, no matter the squalls! And when the time comes you get the chance to really test the cut of your sails, and show what you’re made of… well, I hope I’m there, catching some of the light coming off you that day. ” – John Silver
Number of Times Seen – 1 (22 May 2014)
Brief Synopsis – An adaptation of Treasure Island set in the future in space.
My Take on it – I have always enjoyed retelling of classic tales in new environments and this movie had me hooked by the premise itself.
Unfortunately, the story completely fails at being engaging and entertaining and is mostly just OK throughout.
The best part of this movie are the visual elements which by the use of animation gave them so much to work with that it makes this movie’s inability to soar that much more painful.
The animation is top notch here, but even that can’t help this movie from sinking.
It was the biggest financial flop in all of Disney’s history which is quite disappointing since the potential was there.
Inevitably, it’s just a mediocre addition to the Disney canon.
Bottom Line – Movie with a potentially great premise that is just so-so and doesn’t deliver. Great animation just can’t salvage the biggest flop by Disney ever financially.
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
