Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985)

kiss_of_the_spider_woman“The nicest thing about feeling happy is that you think you’ll never be unhappy again.” – Luis Molina

Number of Times Seen – 1 (25 May 2014)

Brief Synopsis – Two prisoners in a South American prison share secrets and information about their lives.

My Take on it – This is an interesting character study.

The way that this movie tells us the stories of the two main characters is done very well and through their conversations in their small cell, we learn so much about who they are and why they are languishing in prison.

Both Raul Julia and William Hurt are excellent in their roles.  Hurt was able to win a Best Actor Oscar for this role and by doing so, he became the first Actor to win that award while portraying a homosexual.

My one question that kept popping up was why does this seemingly Latin character being played by a blond haired blue eyed very white American and not by another Latin actor like Julia.

Regardless, this movie lets us understand so much about the characters by their words and their actions that we feel quite connected to them.

Bottom Line – Interesting character analysis movie.  Julia and Hurt are both excellent here even though I do question the casting of Hurt. First time an actor won an Oscar for portraying a homosexual.

Rating – Globe Worthy
