Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

Number of Times Seen – 3 (20 Jul 2008, 2011 and 1 Jun 2014)

Brief Synopsis – A recently dumped songwriter goes on vacation in Hawaii to try and forget his actress ex-girlfriend but she happens to be in Hawaii also.

My Take on it – We have all had our share of breakups and this is a movie which shows us one man’s struggle to deal with a very public breakup.

Written by star Jason Segal, this movie hits the mark on so many points that you can see this was created and based on some real events that happened in his own life or of those close to him.

This movie was even more meaningful to me, because of the first devastating breakup of my life 16 years ago.  Her name was also Sarah and I needed to get away for a few days after she broke up with me.  I went with another ex of her’s on a 3 day camping trip in the mountains in order to try to get over her.  As we all know time heals all wounds and it was just a matter of time until I was able to move on, but the feelings one has during those vulnerable moments, days, weeks or months are devastating.

This movie re-awakened some of those feelings in me and I was able to understand much better what he was going through.

The characters created for this story are all done extremely well and the viewer can feel a connection to any one of them based on their personalities.

This movie was directed by Judd Apatow who has brought us many raunchy themed movies which usually go over the top at some point, but the raunchiness portrayed here was done in a more tamer fashion and works really well within the context of the story.

The cast is super.  Besides Segal, the cast includes Paul Rudd, Kristin Bell, Mila Kunis, Russel Brand, Jack McBrayer, Bill Hader and Jonah Hill.

The original songs for a Dracula musical and some other scenes are hilarious!

Bottom Line – Movie that really works as a drama with comedic bits.  Apato’s kind raunchy humor makes this even better because Segal keeps it tame. Great cast. Highly Recommended!

Rating – Oscar Worthy

  2. I agree man, this is raunchy comedy done right! And with a universal message at its core, it’s one that I think guys and girls can enjoy in equal measure.
