Underworld (2003)

underworld“Lycans are allergic to silver. We have to get the bullets out quickly, or they end up dying on us during questioning. ” – Selene

Number of Times Seen – 1 (6 Jun 2014)

Brief Synopsis – A female vampire warrior must save a “special human” who is targeted by their Werewolf enemies

My Take on it – I can’t really explain why I have pyrposely avoided this movie over teh last decade.

Perhaps it’s because I view the theme to be closer to the horror genre than the action thriller one, or perhaps it just seemed too dark for me.

Regardless, based on a recommendation from Kim at Tranquil Dreams, I decided to check it out and found the movie to be quite fun.  It isn’t the best movie I’ve ever seen about vampires or werewolves, but it also wasn’t the worst because it actually has a competent storyline.

The thing with this movie is that it grows on you.  I saw it two days ago and the more I think about it, the more I like a lot of the ideas and themes. (Guess it’s good I had the weekend to think about it) 🙂

The best part of this movie tho is Kate Beckinsale who I have always enjoyed no matter what movie I’ve seen here in.

It’s actually quite interesting that she met her future husband (the director Len Wiseman) while making this film.

I am definitely intrigued to see where the sequels go from here and expect to see them in the near future.

Bottom Line – Fun Vampire action movie that creates an interesting war between them and the rival werewolves.  Interested in seeing where they go with this idea in later movies. Kate Beckinsale in great here (as she usually is) 🙂 .  Recommended!

Rating – Globe Worthy

  1. I love this movie and Beckinsale in it. It blends in well with the new set of vampire and werewolf movies with an edgier side. The sequels sometimes get ahead of themselves but I like the series overall.

      • I wouldn’t say you should skip them. I still like them but they are in the genre of movies where I will like them even if they are terrible (other examples are Priest and Legion). The first movie presents an interesting mythology that is explored in later movies but the excitement and charm developed in the first movie wears off as the series progresses. I don’t want to stain your opinion before you see them though! None of the films received great reviews (at least by Rotten Tomatoes), but that doesn’t really mean much when it comes to movies like this.

  3. Hi Rob! I actually enjoyed the first Underworld movie but haven’t seen the last one. It’s quite fun even if I wouldn’t call it a good movie, ahah. Lots of great supporting actors like Michael Sheen + Bill Nighy, and Kate is pretty bad ass!

  4. Funny thing–I was just watching this on TV earlier tonight! I don’t know that I’d ever seen it all the way through until now, but it’s pretty good, isn’t it? And yeah–Kate Beckinsale rocks. 😀

  5. Love these movies. I own them all. Just watched “I, Frankenstein,” (even Nighy was in it) which was such an “Underworld” rip off. These movies are a lot of fun and quite imaginative. Especially the first. Good work on the review. Glad you wrote this one up. I may pop my blu ray of it in this weekend, now! 🙂
