“The most powerful man in the United States is President Nixon. You’ve heard of him? Charles Colson is special counsel to the President. There’s a cartoon on his wall. The caption reads, “When you’ve got ’em by the balls, their hearts and minds will follow.” – Harry Rosenfeld
Number of Times Seen – 2 (10 Apr 2006 and Jun 2014)
Brief Synopsis – Two Washington Posts reporters follow a story of corruption in government and the dominoes start to fall.
My Take on it – I have always enjoyed movies that feature some kind of conspiracy and what a better way to go than to watch one that really happened
For those unfamiliar with the whole Watergate story, this movie gives a play-by-play description as to what Woodward and Bernstein found out and how while researching this important Washington scandal.
I found it so interesting watching them take notes during phone calls because with the way technology has advanced, now a days it is so much easier to record a phone conversation and then take down notes on that info to your heart’s content, but back then they needed to write everything the interviewee said as he said it. On top of all that, they also needed to be accurate.
Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford are both great here as the famous duo who broke the story.
The rest of the cast are filled with so many famous actors it’s truly unbelievable; Martin Balsam, Jack Warden, Meridith Baxter, Jane Alexander, Ned Beatty, Hal Holbrook and Jason Robards
This was Robards first of 2 consecutive Oscar wins for Supporting Actor (Julia (1977) was the other one). He plays real life Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee in this movie and shows what an editor will do to protect his reporters.
Bottom Line – Great depiction of how one of the biggest stories in US History unraveled before the whole country. Redford and Hoffman are excellent together. Highly recommended!
Rating – Oscar Worthy
