Flight 90: Disaster on the Potomac (1984)

flight-90-disaster-on-the-potomac“This is it. This is a losing battle trying to de-ice these things. It gives you a false feeling of security, that’s all it does.” – First Officer Roger Pettit

Number of Times Seen – Between 3-5 times (TV in ’84, cable and 17 Jun 2014)

Brief Synopsis – The true story of an airline disaster in 1982 and shows us the lives of many of those involved.

My Take on it – I recall seeing this on TV as a 10 year old and being so moved by the way it was done.

In my mind, this is one of the best? (can I say that) airplane natural disaster movie made.

The story is done well because they focus on a few of the characters (some survive, so do not) and we get to see what happened thru their eyes and thru the eyes of their loved ones.

This movie used lots of real footage of the actual disaster and rescue making it seem somewhat like a documentary and not just like a TV movie of the week (which it was).

Some of the actors are recognizable, but they are all good here without anyone overshadowing the others.

The irony for me was that I chose to watch this a mere 12 hours before I was about to get on a plane to fly back home from Germany.

Many scenes of this movie have been etched in my brain for 30 years and it was interesting to see how those images were correct and haven’t changed or faded thru the years.

This is a very moving and emotional movie IMHO and some of the scenes brought me very close to tears

Bottom Line – Very moving and emotional portrayal of this harrowing true story.  Liked how they showed both the stories of loved ones and also the stories of the survivors and rescuers themselves. Recommended!

Rating – Globe Worthy
