The Pacific (2010)

pacific“History is full of wars that are fought for a hundred different reasons. But this war, our war… I have to believe that every step across that airfield, every man that is wounded, every man I lose… and it is all worthwhile, because our cause is just. ” – Capt. Andrew Haldane

Number of Times Seen – 2 (14 Mar- 16 May 2010 and 22-23 Jun 2014)

Brief Synopsis – The story of the US marine’s fight in The Pacific during WWII, told from the perspective of 3 men who fought it.

My Take on it – Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks once again prove how well they work together and like with Saving Private Ryan (1998) and Band of Brothers (2001) they were able to show the gritty and gruesome situations that US soldiers endured during WWII.

This miniseries follows three interweaving stories of 3 different marines who fought during the war in the Pacific.

As much of a fan of history as I believed I was before seeing this, I was able to learn so much about the horrors faced by the marines fighting in The Pacific.

The battles depicted seem so real that it’s very scary watching knowing how close to the truth this movie is.

I was reminded to rewatch this movie after I posted a top ten list for zoe last week on the most realistic battle scenes in movies. Since this is a miniseries and not a movie per se, I deligated this to being an honorable mention eventhough the battles seem so realistic. Due to numerous comments from readers that they had never seen this, I decided to spend the ten hours re watching this.

This is a movie that I truly believe I can watch every few years because it’s so great.

Very heartwarming movie about brothers in arms.

Bottom Line – Gritty and gripping re-telling of the war in the Pacific.  One of the most emotionally heartbreaking mini series ever made. Very realistic battle scenes that don’t spare the viewer from seeing any of the carnage. Highly Recommended!

Rating – Oscar Worthy

    • Totally agree. BoB is definitely better but I think that’s b\c they were able to make us care so much abt each and every character. Here there was only 3 main characters to care about.
