“You really expect Michael to lay down on a couch and talk about his childhood like he’s Woody Allen or something? I mean, Michael’s gift is his ability to forget. He’s mad at no one and he really doesn’t care happened in the past.” – Sean Tuohy
Number of Times Seen – 2 (13 Dec 2009 and 22 Jul 2014)
Brief Synopsis – True story of NFL first round pick Michael Oher who went from being a homeless high school student to star football player through the love and caring of a Tennessee family.
My Take on it – I have always had mixed feelings about this movie because I felt that the story was too hollywoodized and it doesn’t make it seem as believable as it probably is.
This is a commonly known problem when movies are based on true stories and the viewer needs to internalize that fact when watching these kind of movies.
There are a few scenes that make the story better but are hard to swallow as having happened as depicted onscreen.
Despite this movie making the most money for a sports movie ever, it received much backlash from many detractors due to it fictionalizing numerous aspects. Michael Ohr himself critisized the movie for it inaccuracies regarding his own personality depiction.
Sandrs Bullock won a best actress Oscar for this role despite it not being one of her best roles. I think she won it that year because it was a weak year for actresses and also because she finally showed her wide acting range.
Ultimately, this movie is done very well, but it isn’t excellent and I think it was a stretch giving it a best picture nomination. Had the academy stuck with just 5 best picture noms that year, I dont think it would have made the cut.
Bottom Line – Bullock is great here but this isnt her best role. The story is inspiring but done too Hollywoodish which caused it some backlash even from the protagonist himself. Very good but not great movie. Recommended!
Rating – Globe Worthy
