“No one would have believed in the early years of the 21st century that our world was being watched by intelligences greater than our own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns, *they* observed and studied, the way a man with a microscope might scrutinize the creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency, men went to and fro about the globe, confident of our empire over this world. Yet across the gulf of space, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic regarded our planet with envious eyes and slowly, and surely, drew their plans against us. ” – Narrator

Brief Synopsis – A man must find a way to protect himself and his two kids when Aliens invade Earth.
My Take on it – Those of you familiar with my site and with this movie are probably wondering why this isn’t part of my Genre Grandeur for this month.
The answer is quite simple; Genre Grandeur posts are reserved only for my favorites in a given genre.
As much as I enjoyed this movie both times I saw it, it just isn’t great enough a movie to be included in that category.
This movie is Steven Spielberg’s vision of what it would be like if Aliens decide to attack Earth for our resources based on H.G. Wells’ story with the same title.
Tom Cruise plays the main character Ray and the whole movie is told from his perspective. We only know what he knows about the invasion and we only learn new information when he himself does.
This is quite a unique perspective for a movie like this and it actually made me want to learn new things about what is going on nationally or even globally besides what was happening to the characters we meet.
This is enjoyable but both Spielberg and Cruise have done better work.
Bottom Line – Enjoyable ‘invasion’ movie told completely from one characters view, giving us the feeling that we are there and only know what he knows. Spielberg and Cruise are both pretty good here but this isn’t their best work. Recommended!
Rating – Globe Worthy
