Outrageous Fortune (1987)

outrageous fortune“You know what I bet? I bet you haven’t been laid in about a year. ” – Sandy

Number of Times Seen –Probably around 5 times  (theater in ’87, cable and 5 Aug 2014)

Brief Synopsis – Two aspiring actresses unknowingly involved with the same man get caught up in an international conspiracy.

My Take on it – In the 80’s, both Bette Midler and Shelly Long were actresses in high demand. This teaming of the two seemed like a great idea at the time.

I remember going to see this in the theater with my older siblings when I was 13 and enjoying it a lot.

I’m pretty sure I didn’t understand it all back then, but it left an impression on me because even 27 years later, I remembered certain scenes quite vividly.

Unfortunately, it isn’t really as fun as I recall it being and although it’s an interesting premise, it comes off as being very 80’s now.

George Carlin steals every one of the (few) scenes he’s in and it’s quite interesting seeing a very young looking Anthony Heald as an acting classmate of the two stars.

Bottom Line – Not as good as I recall it being when I was thirteen. Long and Midler work well together but the script is very campy and is a clear representation of how movies were made in the 80’s. Unfortunately, this one isnt so good upon revisiting it.

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
