Alfred Hitchcock Blogathon – Rich and Strange (1931)

For our 12th review of our Alfred Hitchcock blogathon, I bring you yet another review by me.

Did I finally find a Hitchcock movie worthy of the master’s stamp?

This movie is also known by the name East of Shanghai, but ultimately it doesn’t matter one bit what it’s called, because any way you look at it, it is boring as hell.

The premise is that of a young couple who are meagerly getting by in life who one day receive a message from an uncle that he wishes to give them their future inheritance now so that they can enjoy it while they are young.

They quit their jobs and decide to travel around the world hoping to re-ignite their love for one another.

During their trip, they both fall in love with others and each wish to find a way to dissolve their marriage finally.

As the trip continues, circumstances have them constantly meeting each other.

The story is extremely boring and although the last scene is typical of Hitchcock’s ironic final scene tricks, the movie isn’t really worth watching.

Soooo…

To answer my original question, this movie once again doesn’t live up to the Hitchcokian name.

I still have another 9 to watch, so maybe I’ll find some gems out there among all this coal.
