Number of Times Seen – 1 (20 Aug 2014)
Brief Synopsis – A pseudo sequel to Hoop Dreams (1994), Arthur Agee follows another high school basketball star in his quest for stardom.
My Take on it – Sequels are usually fun to watch because we then get to revisit characters who we met before and get updated on their lives.
This movie takes place about 13 years after the original documentary and we briefly hear about what has happened in the lives of the two high school stars portrayed in Hoop Dreams (1994).
One of the stars, Arthur Agee decides to mentor another future basketball star with the hopes that perhaps he will succeed where Agee himself failed.
This movie feels like an attempt by Agee to redeem himself but just isn’t nearly as interesting or impactful as the first one was.
Not essential viewing unless you are interested in seeing what happened to the kids feom Hoop Dreams (1994)
Bottom Line – Less interesting than Hoop Dreams (1994) and it seems as if it was made solely for redemptive purposes which weakens its impact.
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
