Number of Times Seen – at least 10 times (cable in the 80’s and 24 Aug 2014)
Brief Synopsis – A platoon of soldiers are given a mission in Vietnam of taking a hill that is not easy for them to conquer even after days of fighting
My Take on it – As a kid I loved this movie and watched it so many times on HBO.
This time I enjoyed it a bit less but am amazed at how many recognizable actors had parts in this.
Dylan McDermitt, Don Cheadle, Steven Weber and Courtney B. Vance all became stars later on but it was great watching them here.
I was planning on using this for one of my Genre Grandeur posts, but since the point of GG is for our favorite movies in a genre, my rewatch lowered my impression of this a bit then taking away its favorite status.
I think that this movie does depict the craziness and futility of war perfectly because unlike during WWII, the goals and accomplishments of each battle were changed once they were in the Vietnamese countryside. Unfortunately, the US military took too long to realize this.
This movie feels like it is based on a true story (which it might very well be) so it has a more poignant feeling to it.
Bottom Line – Definitely a movie that shows the futility of war. Seems to be somewhat based on truth to make it more poignant. Amazing cast of future stars. Recommended!
Rating – Globe Worthy
