“Save the ones you can Jake. The rest, you’ve got to let go. ” – Ben Randall
Number of Times Seen – 2 (14 Jan 2007 and 26 Aug 2014)
Brief Synopsis – A Senior Coast Guard rescue swimmer is sent to train new recruits after an accident injures him.
My Take on it – This was a fun adrenaline pumping movie that is completely a full length theatrical advertisement for the Coast Guard in the same fashion that Top Gun (1985) and Backdraft (1991) were for Naval aviators and firemen respectively.
Who woulda thought that the teaming of Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher would work so well together.
Parts of this movie and the repore between the two leads reminded me of Gere and Gosset jr. in An Officer and A Gentleman (1982) but unlike there, this movie intelligently continues after graduation.
I felt that the typical local love interest aspect could have been dropped because it slightly takes away from the message of the movie.
Bottom Line – Pretty good attempt to do for the Coast Guard what Top Gun (1985) did for naval pilots and what Backdraft (1991) did for firefighters. Good casting choice to team up Costner and Kutcher. Recommended!
Rating – Globe Worthy
