“It is not the violence that sets men apart, alright, it is the distance that he is prepared to go.” – Forrest Bondurant
Number of Times Seen – 1 (7 Sep 2014)
Brief Synopsis –Three bootlegging brothers in depression era Virginia take on a corrupt cop leading to disastrous consequences.
My Take on it – I think this movie isn’t really as good as all the hype surrounding it claims it to be.
Prohibion era booze smuggling movies have been made many times and I guess the thing that this movie tries to use to differentiate it is the fact that this is based on the true memoir of the main character.
Unfortunately, I didnt find the way this was presented to be interesting and felt that too many characters just weren’t developed enough.
The cast is very good but since I felt the story to be lacking, I dont think there was much they could do to strengthen this movie.
The scenes that worked best were actually the most violent ones, making the quality seem very lopsided.
All in all, this wasn’t as good as it potentially could have been.
Bottom Line – Too much hype for a mediocre movie. There are so many better depression era movies dealing with prohibition. Good cast but it’s too bad they didn’t have a better story to work with.
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
