“I’m going to be a great film star! That is, if booze and sex don’t get me first.” – Sally
Number of Times Seen – 2 (sometime in the 90’s and 8 Sep 2014)
Brief Synopsis – An American nightclub dancer and a British writer meet up and become friends in Germany in the final days of the Wiemar Republic.
My Take on it – For some reason I have always felt very partial towards traditional movie musicals like West Side Story (1961), Sound of Music (1965) and Fiddler on the Roof (1971) and have enjoyed non traditional ones like All that Jazz (1979) and Chicago (2002) much less.
This movie falls somewhere in between as far as I’m concerned.
I enjoyed some of the songs very much bit a few others just aren’t very memorable.
Both Liza Minelli and Joel Grey are exceptional here in their roles and each deservingly won Oscars for their performances.
The problem with this movie IMHO is that I didnt find the story to be strong enough for me to care even remotely about the characters or the situations they are in. Which is quite unfortunate. 😦
This movie has the distinction of having won the most Oscars ever without taking home Best Picture.
It won 8 oscars while its rival The Godfather (1972) took home only 3 awards (picture, Actor and Screenplay)
Bottom Line – Has some great songs, excellent performances by all especially Minelli and Grey. Story isn’t as captivating as I thought it could be. Recommended!
Rating – Globe Worthy

Wow that’s crazy, Godfather only won 3 while this took home 8?? I suppose the argument could be made that Godfather took home 3 “bigger” awards, but hey. Eight trophies ain’t bad. 🙂

Completely agree with u Tom. The question always remains. Does this analogy mean that 12 years is better than Gravity?

For what it’s worth, Tom, I contend this flick is considerably better than Godfather 1.

Glad you more or less liked it, even if you don’t enjoy it as much as I do.
For me, the plot isn’t the thing here. The characters, setting, mood and themes are (in that order).
