Number of Times Seen – 1 (6 Oct 2014)
Brief Synopsis – An American girl living abroad gets inadvertently involved with a drug smuggling outfit as a drug mule and subsequently gains use of her higher brain functions turning her into a very powerful person when the powder inside her stomach begins to leak.
My Take on it – Ever since I saw Leon: The Professional (1994) twenty years ago, I have been a big fan of Luc Besson and his interesting concepts for movies.
This movie is no exception to that.
The idea that a drug would allow someone to gain more access to the abilities of the brain is not new (Limitless (2011) explored that thoroughly also) , but Besson is able to take it in a new direction which works for the most part.
Unfortunately, the freshness of the idea gets lost in the attempt to take it higher and higher which helps distance the audience more and more as the movie moves forward.
The choice to cast Scarlett Johansson as the lead with Morgan Freeman as an academic who tries to understand what is happening to her are both great casting choices.
As with most of Besson’s movies, this one is a high adrenaline rush to experience and some of the ideas brought forth are truly mind blowing.
Bottom Line – Very interesting concept that starts off great but just loses its grip on the novelty of the idea along the way. Johansson and Freeman are both great in the high adrenaline story created by Luc Besson who knows how to make very interesting movies. Recommended
Rating – Globe Worthy
