The idea behind this new feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.
Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of BioPics…
Number of Times Seen – 1 (17 Oct 2014)
Brief Synopsis – Screen adaptation of the stage musical about the men who were part of the hit band The Four Seasons and its lead singer Frankie Valli during the 1960’s.
My Take on it – This is a movie that I’ve wanted to see for a long while because of two main reasons:
1. The music of The Four Seasons is amazing.
2. The fact that this is directed by Clint Eastwood who knows how to direct movies giving us compelling viewing.
I was unhappy to see that this movie fails in a similar fashion that many other biopics also falter.
The storyline is extremely focused during the creation of the famous foursome, but ultimately glosses over much of the following years, which gives us a very incomplete feeling about the storyline. Something just feels missing.
This fact disappointed me because I had expected much more from both Eastwood and hoped history wouldn’t repeat itself here like it did.
The music is deftly used both in the background and the foreground and we get samples of some of their best hits.
Most of the actors are recreating the roles they played on the stage, so they thankfully chose actors who could sing and know their own characters very well.
Bottom Line – Unfortunately it hits the same obstacles that many biographical movies encounter; instead of focusing equally throughout the time span depicted, it is top heavy and then glosses over too many years. Music from the Four Seasons is great and is played throughout.
Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Unfortunately not. I had high expectation for this one that just weren’t even close to being met and I felt that the amount of time spent on important parts of the story was presented very unevenly, so overall, I cannot say that this will rank among my favorite BioPic films.
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
