Here’s my first entry for this month’s Genre Grandeur – biopics.
Lets see what I think about Lincoln and why it’s one of my all-time favorite biopics…..
“Trust? Gentlemen, you seem to have forgotten that our chosen career is politics. ” – Thaddeus Stevens
Number of Times Seen – 2 (27 Dec 2012 and 26 Oct 2014)
Brief Synopsis – Chronicles Lincoln’s quest to end the Civil War through both political and peaceful means in 1865.
My Take on it – Steven Spielberg has always been known for finding great ways to entertain his audience.
This time he takes a larger than life figure from US history and breathes life into him showing how great a politician he was during a very difficult time.
When people usually think about politics of yore, they don’t picture The West Wing or House of Cards, they think of boring political manuevers. This movie actually brings such flavor to the way politics worked during the mid 19th Century that it is so exciting and interesting to watch.
As great as this movie is, it wouldn’t be the same if it didn’t have Daniel Day Lewis in the title role. His portrayal of our 16th President is unbelievable and it’s even better than the iconic Raymond Massey who played Lincoln numerous times over the years.
For this role, he won his third Best Actor Oscar proving how truly great an actor he is.
Bottom Line – Great portrayal of Lincoln’s political genius during a difficult period in US history. Day-Lewis is once again amazing in his role and deserves to be alone at the top with 3 Best Actor Oscars to his credit. Highly recommended!
Rating – Oscar Worthy
